Bishop Camillo Ballin MCCJ, the Apostolic Vicar of Northern Arabia, passed away in Rome in the evening of Easter Sunday 12 April 2020. He was undergoing treatment in Rome at the Gemelli Polyclinic since the last two months following diagnosis with cancer of the lung.
During this period, Bishop Paul Hinder and other bishops of the Latin Conference of the Arab Regions (CELRA) were able to visit Bishop Camillo and spend a few moments with him as they convened in Rome from 17-20 February 2020 for their 70th Plenary Assembly.
Fr. P. M. Peter, the Vicar General of the Apostolic Vicariate of Northern Arabia sent out a brief note today morning to the clergy on the passing away of Bishop Ballin. The same brief announcement was also posted on the website of the Northern Vicariate (www.avona.org).
Fr. Antony Lopez, Chancellor of the Northern Vicariate, also issued the following communique asking that, in light of the present situation of the pandemic, priests are to celebrate requeim masses in individual parishes without the presence of the faithful and asking the faithful to pray for the soul of the Bishop.
Further details are still being awaited from the Generalate of the Comboni Missionaries in Rome and will be communicated in due course.
